How to Rent Snow Chains?

Did you know that Victorian law states that you must carry snow chains with you in the car when travelling to Mt Hotham Ski Resort.

If you’re new to using snow chains or don’t want to buy them, the most cost-effective solution is to rent them for us. We will even fit them for you!

What you need to know about snow chains

Knowing your tyre size is one of the first steps to choosing the right snow chains for your vehicle. This can be found on the sidewall of the tyre. It’s also important to review your car’s manual to determine if chains can be safely fitted. Some cars have specific guidelines and restrictions regarding chain usage.

It’s important to be aware of the laws and requirements governing the use of tyre chains in your area.  We can help you understand what you need depending on where you’re driving, and then determine whether your car is suitable for snow chains and the best way to securely fit them if needed.

Snow Chain FAQs

How many snow chains do I need to fit on my car?

For front-wheel drive vehicles, one pair of snow chains should be fitted to the front wheels.

In the case of 4-wheel drive vehicles, it is important to engage 4-wheel drive and either fit one pair of snow chains to the front wheels (if there is sufficient clearance) or to the back wheels if that is the only option. To determine the best course of action, consult your vehicle’s manual for specific advice and the manufacturer’s specifications. It is beneficial for all vehicles to have snow chains fitted to all wheels to enhance lateral grip. This will help reduce understeer in rear-wheel drive vehicles and decrease oversteer in front-wheel drive and 4×4 vehicles.

For rear-wheel drive vehicles, installing chains on all wheels is the safest option. This ensures consistent grip at both ends of the vehicle, offering maximum resilience in harsh conditions.

Is it necessary to use snow chains if I have a 4WD vehicle?

Absolutely. Despite the enhanced traction provided by 4 x 4 vehicles compared to traditional 2-wheel drive systems, snow chains offer a substantial boost in traction, even more so than just specialised snow tires.

Will the snow chains scratch my wheels?

While typically snow chains clear your wheels, there can be some wear to the alloys through their natural use. A simple way to avoid this is to apply duct tape to any points of contact between the snow chains and your alloys.
